RBA were contracted to plan and supervise modernisation of a 1920s residential complex in Berlin-Steglitz. The complex consists of 12 apartment blocks with approx. 11,000 m² of apartments arranged around landscaped courtyards. The owners, a major German residential investor, wished to modernise and insulate the facades and revitalise common areas such as the staircases. Large new balconies are to be added to 44 of the apartments as a major improvement for the residents. This project followed on from a previous feasibility study carried out by Ronski+Burke for the same client. Elements such as the addition of external elevators and the conversion of the roof spaces had been shown to be uneconomic and were therefore dropped from the budget.
